How to Rank Higher on Google Maps with Your Google Business Profile

Team planning work together at a table

When someone searches for a hospital, jeweller, restaurant or shop near them, Google shows a map with a few businesses at the top. For many local businesses in India, that small box brings more calls and visits than the website itself. Here is how to improve your chances of appearing there.

How Google decides who shows up

Google says local results depend on three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the person searching) and prominence (how well known and trusted your business is). You cannot change distance, but you can improve relevance and prominence.

1. Choose the right categories

Your primary category has a big effect on which searches you appear for. Pick the most specific category that describes your main business, for example "Cardiologist" rather than only "Hospital" if that is your focus, then add secondary categories for other services.

2. Fill in every detail

Complete your address, phone number, website, opening hours, holiday hours, services, products and attributes. Write a description in simple language that explains what you do and which area you serve. Complete profiles are easier for Google to match with searches.

3. Add real photos regularly

Upload photos of your shop or office from outside and inside, your team, your products and your work. Real, recent photos build trust with customers and show Google that the business is active.

4. Ask for reviews, and reply to them

Reviews are one of the strongest signals of prominence. Share your review link on WhatsApp after every sale or visit, print a QR code at your counter, and reply politely to every review. Never buy fake reviews: they can get your profile suspended.

5. Post updates every week

Use Google Business Profile posts for offers, festival greetings, new products and events. Regular posts keep your profile fresh and give customers another reason to choose you.

6. Keep your details consistent everywhere

Your business name, address and phone number should be the same on your website, Google profile, Facebook, Instagram and directories like Justdial. Mismatched details confuse Google and customers.

7. Connect it to a good website

A fast, mobile-friendly website with your address, a map, your services and local business schema supports your Google profile. Many people check the website before they call.
